Well, nobody expected THIS. Her previous album Frank was a gem, albeit a primarily jazzy thang, but Back To Black took her to another planet. Mark Ronson joined Frank producer Salaam Remi, the jazz was jettisoned in favour of a blissfully rich yet attractively dirty retro style owing much to old school Motown soul and R&B. Hardly a new idea but the unique Winehouse voice makes it all vividly fresh again. Amy?s trump card is her ability to make it sound so grubbily authentic - probably because it IS grubbily authentic. She?s not fabricating the pain in Love Is A Losing Game or the despair of Back to Black and she ain?t kidding about on Rehab either. A heartbreaking classic.
