Review: Buoyed by the critical acclaim of 2007’s Armchair Apocrypha, the whistling maestro empties a head full of crooked melodies onto a canvas of fractured rhythms and rich soundscapes on solo album number five. Summoning the ambition of Radiohead and the awkward eloquence of Surfjan Stevens, Bird’s ear for a crafted pop gem sits against a backdrop of classical influences and jazz-inspired improvisation. Not a Robot, But a Ghost and Unfolding Fans hint at a new-found confidence and a heightened musical audacity, whilst Nonmenclature allows the violin virtuoso to meld his technical skill with a love of earthy alt country and mammoth crescendos. Clipped drum rolls and eccentric chimes add to the ambient concoction of delicate, cinematic dreams and hushed, throwaway drawls, but it’s the barrage of tongue twisting, head-scratching lyrics that leave you most in awe. This Bird whistles an elegant and eclectic tune.
