The 1975 follow-up to the critically acclaimed LA Turnaround, Santa Barbara Honeymoon represents the peak of Charisma’s attempts to transform his introspective style into full-blooded mainstream appeal. Some Jansch aficianados reject it out of hand on that basis alone but, while producer Danny Lane engages in some unnecessary excesses with reverb, phase shifters and syncopated guitar, it still has some classic moments. A full-blooded Dixieland jazz band, swirling synths and frenetic arrangements maintain a vigorous intensity while it also includes some wonderful Jansch songs – the beautiful ballad When The Teardrops Fell, the catchy Baby Blue and his alternative story of Mary and Joseph among them. There’s also a charming treatment of the old standard You Are My Sunshine and a telling re-visit to one of his signature songs, Jackson C Frank’s Blues Run The Game.
