The whole Dylan bootleg series provides invaluable fresh insights into the way the great man works, bringing different approaches to some classics alongside revelatory inclusions of previously unreleased material. Volume eight is one of the most valuable of all, offering invigorating alternative views of the latter period officially reflected by his Oh Mercy, World Gone Wrong, Time Out of Mind and Modern Times LPs. All manner of wondrous stuff lurks within the Ralph Stanley duet, Lonesome River, the weighty slow blues of Marchin' to the City and Mississippi and the rocking live track High Water from 2003 are particular highs and, despite the broad time expanse and the jagged inconsistencies as it lurches from live cuts to the distinctively atmospheric Lanois productions, it has formidable, lasting impact.
