By 1980, three-chord punk had all but dwindled into self parody or at least mutated into the more experimental sound of post-punk – the sneering had become pantomime, the music turgid...then along came the Dead Kennedys. Armed with the most captivating and controversial lyricist US punk had ever seen in Jello Biafra, this classic debut - recorded live in the studio - has finally garnered the critical acclaim it was due many years ago. Devastating hardcore anthems like California Uber Alles, Kill The Poor and Let’s Lynch The Landlord were typical – Biafra’s (often witty) dissection of Reagan-era America spilling over a succession of killer, surf-inspired guitar hooks. The filth and fury of punk was back; the DK’s malevolent mission under way.
