Review: With a swish of her asymmetric quiff and a roll of her over-sized shoulder pads, 21-year-old Elly Jackson pilfers every shiny 80s disco bleep going, adds some folksy simpering and emerges as an all-conquering dancefloor diva. Producer Ben Langmaid injects Human League keyboards, fizzing synths and infectious hooks to propel Jackson’s androgynous art school pout into chart-topping electro-pop glory. Whilst Bulletproof’s mind-furrowing catchiness wrenches its way into the psyche, In For The Kill’s android throbs shoot evil glares at Lady Gaga and Quicksand warps Prince and Grace Jones into forlorn heartbreak. As the critics continue to lap up every robotic warble, her sass and splendour has capitulated her to number one in the charts and onto the Mercury Music Prize shortlist. World domination must surely be set to follow.
